CS 6724: Visual Analytics: Cognition + Computation Dr. Chris North Fall 2013 To tackle the onset of big data, interactive visual analytics seeks to marry human cognition with computational analytical horsepower. What capabilities do each of these parties bring to the table, and how can they be effectively combined? How are they different and what is the common ground? How do human analysts think? What techniques and strategies do they use? How can they interact with complex mathematical models? What are the usability issues associated with analytics? How can we design data transformation methods to respond dynamically to human interaction? How can we visually represent these processes and data? How does this approach scale up to multiple types of users (e.g. analysts vs. decision makers), algorithms, and data.
