Does someone happen to know a good article which handles with Fitt's law in 3D? The articles I read where all a bit vague with respect to this.. (also the Guiard paper at CHI99). Interesting also: Jacoby (I thought) names 3D as possible advantage for affordance, of course this would weaken the guideline... > >-Make use of strengths of input and output devices for affordance > > / match system control to characteristics of the devices you use - this > > might be the most obvious in case of props. > > > I am not sure which "characteristices" you refer to. Anyway, I feel that > the physical or form factors of input device are very important, > yet, under-studied. A prop might be the best example - affordance is an obvious part here. Though, it might go deeper- for example, when one uses some kind of circular menu (like a ring menu) the way one uses the menu is also depending on the input device. The way you can best rotate the ring is depending on how you hold the input device, that is, how you can move your wrist (or fingers). So, how fast and easy you move the selection box to a menu item is depending on the way you move/rotate your input device. Also, talking about output devices, the spatial reference of a responsive workbench (strong table metaphor) is very good for placing system control menus at the border. I think even Polyshop used this table metaphor for placing and ordening menus, need to check that. I am Looking forward to more comments! I would especially be interested in hearing some more on the categorization and my question on "the maximum amount of elements" .... furthermore, the guidelines can't be that good already that no one has experiences which completely weaken the proposed guidelines :-) Cheers, -Ernst ernst kruijff (M.A.) teaching and research scientist ____________________________________________ .................bauhaus-universitaet weimar .....................faculty of architecture chair caad and architecture [prof.dr.donath] ............................d - 99421 weimar .............fon/fax: +49 (0)3643 584282 /02 .........email: kruijff@archit.uni-weimar.de ......url: http://www.uni-weimar.de/~kruijff ............................guest researcher .........Virtual Environments Group (IMK.VE) ............................GMD St. Augustin
