I was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and graduated Cum Laude from the McCallie School in June, 1990. I attended Emory University in Atlanta and graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Summa Cum Laude in May, 1994. My honors thesis was entitled, "Performance Analysis of the Conch Concurrent Computing System." I was married to the former Dawn Elizabeth Buck in 1995.

I performed my Ph.D. research at Georgia Tech, in the College of Computing and the GVU Center. I was part of the Virtual Environments Group, and my advisor was Dr. Larry F. Hodges.

I joined the faculty in the Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech in August, 1999. I head the 3D interaction (3DI) research group, and participate in the University Visualization and Animation Group (UVAG) and Center for Human-Computer Interaction.

Dawn and I live in Blacksburg, Virginia with our three children. We are committed to Jesus Christ and are active in the ministries of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church.
