Title: Issues concerning Content Management Systems (CMS) and their implementation Lecturer: Kristijan Zimmer, Department of information systems Faculty of electrical engineering and computing (FER) University of Zagreb, Croatia Abstract This presentation gives an overview of the recently developed Content Management System (CMS) that serves as a public information portal, intranet web and a web based support of the teaching process for the Faculty of electrical engineering and computing (FER), University of Zagreb, Croatia. The presentation covers a brief history of web based systems, from static pages to CMS, implemented technical solutions, benefits of applying modular design, inter-module communication and importance of the content changelog. It also addresses issues concerning the inclusion of large number of static pages into the CMS (important if there is an existing static Web that needs to be incorporated into the CMS), search engine, and improving system performance by using cache. Short bio: Kristijan Zimmer is an Internet services architect at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, University of Zagreb, Croatia, where he leads a team building a dynamic, community-oriented academic Web portal / Content management system. He is currently a president of the HrOpen - Croatian Society for Open Systems and Internet and an active member of the HULK - Croatian Linux Users Group. In recent years he has lectured workshops and seminars about Web applications development and design, PHP and Java programming languages, process visualization, VoIP, mobile commerce and streaming multimedia. He is a program committee member of several annual IT events including International System Administration and Networking Conference (SANE, Maastricht, The Netherlands), Croatian Open Systems Days (DORS), Information Systems Methods and Tools (CASE) and Communication Technologies and Standards in Informatics (KOM).
