Logambigai Venkatachalam

Welcome

I am a Masters student in the Computer Science Dept. at Virginia Polytechnic and State University. My advisor is Prof. Edward Fox and I work in the Digital Library Research Laboratory. I have done by B.E in Computer Science from KEC, Erode and have worked with Oracle Corporation prior to my graduate studies.

Current Projects

Extensions on Stepping stones and pathways

The stepping stones and pathways (SSP) project aims at handling hard queries, which are hardly covered by single documents. Our solution is to find a group of documents which are related and each of which covers different aspects of the queries. The implementation includes a backend system and a user interface to support users. interactions on the answers. Most of the goals as proposed for the NSF funding have been achieved already and also many possibilities to improve it and extend it to many more applications and domains have been found. The plan is to change the existing in-memory search engine to the Lucene search engine due to a requirement for bigger collections than the current working ones. In this task important side effect is going to be perfomance. This has to be explored and addressed by i)using appropriate data structures ii) using caching mechanisms iii) clustering data together(algorithms for this) iv) Changes to the system to scale efficiently.

UI in Digital Libraries

The task is to develop a solid Graphical User Interface on top of a Digital Library that is usable, accessible, scalable, and reliable across different platforms with the help of usability methodologies and evaluative concepts.Usability of interfaces is crucial to the success of a digital library. Without having an easy to use, consistent, and straightforward interface to allow quick access and management to a digital library a user would be less likely to use it, let alone come back to it. There are many methodologies and practices that should be integrated into the design of a user interface, let alone a graphical user interface. We plan to develop a UI for a digital library that is usable, portable, interoperable, and accessible through different media and people.
