Description
New education technologies appear ready to change everything about how education will be done in the future. MOOCs, eTextbooks, and interactive technologies like social media are just a few of the tools already making their way into mainstream education.
This course will cover a broad range of topics related to online education in particular. Our main focus is on relevant software systems, frameworks, and architectures. We will also ground our exploration of these systems in fundamental pedagogical theories that seem to offer guiding principles for system design. Topics include:
- History of the use of online educational systems
- Existing research on their pedagogical effectiveness
- The use of visualization and simulation in education
- Online assessment: Question banks and automated assessment
- Intelligent Tutoring
- MOOCs
- eTextbooks
This will be a seminar-style course based largely on reading and discussing research papers. A significant semester project will be developed by students, either individually or in teams. Publishable papers related to the projects are possible and will be encouraged.
