CS6604: Designing and Implementing Online Education Systems
Assignment 1: Spring 2015
15% of semester grade
You must give a class presention during the course of the semester. The presenations will typically last around 45-60 minutes. Presentation topics must be relevant to the course topics. Reasonable topics for presentation include: reporting on relevant educational experiences that you have had that include online course materials, research projects that you have been involved in relating to online education and their software systems, computer software or systems relevant to online education, or pedagogical issues related to online educational systems.
Topic and date for presentation must be approved by and coordinated with Dr. Shaffer. All students must schedule their presentation date and topic by Monday, February 9. By that date, send me email describing what you would like to present, and information about when you would like to do your presentation.
A presentation will typically be organized around one or two papers and class discussion. In this case, you should inform the class a week in advance of what paper(s) they should read to prepare for the discussion.
Here are some potential topics for presentation.
- MOOCs
- OpenEdX Infrastructure (Introduction to be given by Hosam Shahin, but we can have more presentations on this system)
- Khan Academy Infrastructure
- Commercial eTextbook and course content systems (e.g., Cengage Learning, Scholar)
- Automated assessment systems and question banks (especially assessment of programming exercises or other "non-trivial" activities)
- Intelligent Tutors
- Pedagogy: "No Significant Difference" controversy (Dr. Shaffer will present)
- Pedagogy: Learning Styles (Dr. Shaffer will present)
- Pedagogy: Motivation and related issues in online settings
- Evaluating pedagogical effectiveness for an educational intervention
- Internationalization of content (and other support for customization)
- Content authoring tools
- Running online classes: Pedagogical approaches ("flipped classroom", etc)
- Gamification
