Publications, Scholarship, and Research Recognitions

  1. Wu Feng's 2005 paper was recognized at SC22 with the Test of Time Award. Wu's paper, "A Power-Aware Run-Time System for High Performance Computing," was co-authored with Chung-hsing Hsu (ORNL).
  2. Tijay Chung is co-author on a paper that received a best paper honorable mention award at the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS 2022). The paper is titled "Hammurabi: A Framework for Pluggable, Logic-based X.509 Certificate Validation Policies."
  3. Na Meng is co-author on a paper that was recognized with the best paper award at the Symposium on Dependable Software Engineering (SETTA 2022). The paper, "Mastery: Shifted-Code-Aware Structured Merging," is joint work with colleagues at Tsinghua University.
  4. Students Alex Giovannelli and Lee Lisle, and their advisor Doug Bowman received the Honorable Mention best paper award at IEEE ISMAR 2022 for their paper "Exploring the Impact of Visual Information on Intermittent Typing in Virtual Reality".
  5. CT Lu and PhD students Shailik Sarkar, Abdulaziz Alhamadani, and Lulwah Alkulaib received the best paper award at the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Advances in Social Networks Analysis and Mining (ASONAM 2022) for their paper "Predicting Depression and Anxiety on Reddit: a Multi-task Learning Approach."
  6. Recent MS grad Tam Phan, Doug Bowman, and Sang Won Lee (Tam's advisor) received a best poster award at the ACM Spatial User Interaction (SUI 2022) conference.
  7. Matt Hicks and his students were awarded a best poster award at the Annual Computer Security Applications Conference (ACSAC).
  8. Hoda Eldardiry is co-author on a paper that received a most cited paper award from the International Journal of Transportation Science and Technology (IJTST).
  9. Doug Bowman and Chris North each gave keynote addresses at the International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC 2022).
  10. Alum Yue Cheng received the IEEE-CS Technical Community on High Performance Computing (TCHPC) Early Career Researchers Award for Excellence in High Performance Computing.

  5. Thang Hoang will serve as short-talks chair for IEEE S&P 2023.
  6. Kurt Luther is serving as Posters & Demos co-chair for AAAI HCOMP 2023 and ACM Collective Intelligence 2023 (joint conference.)

  1. TM Murali led a successful proposal to define a new VT Destination Area "Pandemic Prediction and Prevention (Destination Normal: Envisioning a World Free of Pandemics)". Deb Bhattacharya and Anuj Karpatne are co-PIs on this proposal as well.
  2. In addiiton, CS faculty members are part of the team proposing two other successful DA 2.0 proposals: Shaddi Hasan with "Virginia Tech Public Interest Technology Initiative (VT-PIT)" and Denis Gracanin with "Human Systems Integration in Health Care."
