Academic Leadership & Administrative Experience

Associate Department Head for Graduate Studies

Department of Computer Science, Virginia Tech

I am committed to graduate education, faculty mentoring, and building graduate programs that combine academic excellence with a supportive research environment. In my role as Associate Department Head for Graduate Studies, I oversee graduate admissions, funding strategy, academic policies, curriculum, and student success initiatives. Key focus areas include:

  • Program & Enrollment Governance: Managing graduate admissions, student progress tracking, and funding allocations (GTAs/GRA oversight) across M.S. and Ph.D. tracks.
  • Graduate Recruitment: Developing targeted recruitment strategies to attract high-caliber domestic and international applicants and enhance cohort diversity.
  • Curriculum Modernization: Leading departmental reviews of graduate course requirements, capstone formats, and interdisciplinary degree pathways.
  • Faculty & Student Advocacy: Resolving academic policy challenges, supporting graduate student mentorship, and aligning program offerings with institutional research strengths.

Research & Overview

I lead the Software Innovations Lab at Virginia Tech. My research lies on the Systems end of Software Engineering, with a focus on distributed systems and middleware, automated software transformation, mobile/IoT applications, software energy efficiency, security and privacy, CS education, and music informatics.

I have published over 145 refereed research papers on these subjects. My research awards include a Microsoft Research Software Engineering Innovation Foundation Award and an IBM Faculty Award. My projects are supported by major U.S. federal funding agencies and industry partners.
