CS 6724 D Gracanin Human Computer Interaction and Internet of Things

Smart built environments enhanced with technology can improve the lives of individuals, groups, and the broader community. Internet of Things (IoT), a collection of networked and interacting embedded devices, could provide the necessary infrastructure and enabling technologies to design, develop and deploy smart built environments. User tasks in smart built environments usually involve interaction with physical objects that respond to user actions with some kind of feedback. Traditional human-computer interaction techniques are not always well suited for such tasks since supporting user interactions with smart built environments raises some unique usability challenges. There is a need for new user interaction techniques and paradigms to support access to and communication with physical environment, information and people, both local and remote.

In this class we will review the state-of-the-art of human computer interaction in smart built environments and then identify and explore key research issues.
