CS 6824 | L Zhang | Computational Genomics |
Why is computer science indispensable for discoveries in life and medical sciences? How are buzz words such as personal disease profiling, precision medicine, second human brain only made possible by computational science? Answers will be found through taking this class. You will learn essential bioinformatics algorithms and work on several exciting projects that transform big bio-data into knowledge discovery. Big bio-data include genomics, transcriptomic, proteomic, metagenomics, metatranscriptomic, etc, collected from healthy/cancer people and various environments. Students from diverse background are encouraged to take this course as the projects require integration of knowledge and skills encompassing algorithm development, statistics, biology, and high performance computing. Hands-on research experience brings it to home that without computational science, new knowledge discovery in life/biomedical science is impossible in this era of bio-data tsunami.
