Collaborative Virtual Design Environments (CVDE) has been founded to retrieve information on conceptual design tool from the developers themselves, in the first place to have a strong enough basis for finishing my graduation thesis. It turned out, that CVDE has become much more than just a information exchange which is monitored by several people - it has become a discussion forum. My first aim is thus to finish my thesis. However, I will continue my research after graduation at Bauhaus-University Weimar (Germany), so the CDVE discussion group will stay to exist. It is my idea to _at least_ issue the next topics: - further information retrievement on conceptual design tools, with the aim to write an extensive (in depth) tech report on primarily conceptual design tools. This would mean a comprehensive description of system setups, developers aims, interaction methods and all the other functionality. I think such a report would be very valuable for the developers of conceptual design tools. - the next step would be to focus on collaborative design. I am currently, in my thesis, issuing asynchronous communication by exchanging "shared representations" with the sufficient information to support collaboration. - After this, the focus could be on distributed VEs for collaborative design, as does the title of the discussion group implicates. Summarizing, CVDE issues at least the next (broad) topics: - (conceptual) architectural design tools - collaboration / groupware techniques | distributed VR - User interface techniques with a specific focus on 3D-UIs - Virtual Reality and possibly Augmented Reality So, CVDE does NOT specifically aim at 3D-UIs, although lately a lot of interface techniques have been discussed. I think it is much better to think of CVDE as the testbed for 3D-UI techniques and 3D/VR equipment. Since a lot of the 3D-UI participants have an affinity with architecture, both discussions can definately be combined, to complement each other. Together we can reach a much larger group, and possibly combine user experience tests and expertise! To conclude, 3D-UI and CVDE are not fighting with each other for participants - many participants attend both discussions, which I highly encourage! If someone wants to join CVDE :-) : you're more than welcome! Please write an email to me at: ernst@kwetal.ms.mff.cuni.cz and I'll introduce you to the rest of the participants.
