I've only heard men make the complaint. Have you seen Sidney Fels' Glove-Talk 2 demo? The output of a neural net recognizer feeds phonemes to a voice synthesizer. An actor trained on this thing for about 6 months, and was able to get this thing to talk moderately intelligibly. For example, the guy was able to read a recognizable Green Eggs & Ham.
