We've used a stylus & physical tablet combination in a couple of projects (Virtual Venue and Virtual Habitat) to do menus and 2D GUIs with physical feedback (tablet surface). I originally saw this idea with Angus et al's work at Boeing with using a pen&tablet metaphor to access the Web from inside a VE. I'm also exploring the use of a stylus combined with a regular tracker receiver to specify points in 3-space relative to that receiver (placing markers on a 3D map in my experiment).
