I have been reading through Doug Bowman's thesis on 'Interaction Techniques for Comman Tasks in Immersive Virtual Environements'. Doug lists the important tasks in VE interaction as Selection, Release, Manipulation and Travel. Would 'System Command' not also be a universal task? Intuitively, the taxonomy could be: |-Speech |-Direct---|-Gesture System Command -| |-Indirect-|-Virtual Menu |-Tool/Widget I realise that, certainally with the Indirect branch, this could be thought of as specific form of a selection operation - but I feel that the actions of Selection and giving commands to the system are sufficiently different to warrant another 'universal task'. Any comments? Any additions to my taxonomy (I realise that it is pretty simplistic) ?
