This project is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and is scheduled to run for three years (two years funded, a third year of funding is highly likely). More details on the project are given in the summary below. We are looking for a candidate having some or most of the following qualifications: · University degree, preferably MSc (Diplom, DEA, or equivalent) in computer science or related field; plus the intent to pursue a PhD at TUW or in collaboration with the candidate's home institute. · Strong interest in research on virtual environments, augmented reality, human-computer interaction, real-time graphics, and mobile computing. Some background in computer graphics is expected. · Considerable experience with software development methodology and tools, in particular object-oriented programming, C++, OpenGL, Open Inventor, IRIX, Windows NT/2000, Linux. Prior involvement in research or development projects is a plus. · Fluency in English, good communication skills and capability of working in teams complete the profile of a successful candidate. Note that knowledge of German is not expected (but this may be your chance to learn it! :-). What do we offer in exchange: · The opportunity of pursuing a funded PhD in an exciting new research area (also note that that enrollment in the PhD program at TUW in the course of this project is free of tuition expenses). · A lot of freedom to explore both your scientific and creative interests in the course of your work · A very good working climate · A chance to live in the beautiful city of Vienna The applicant will be funded according to the salary regulations of the FWF. If you think about applying, send a letter including curriculum vitae and list of publications (preferable by email) to: Dr. Dieter Schmalstieg Vienna University of Technology Favoritenstrasse 9-11 A-1040 Vienna Austria Tel. +43(1)58801-18674 dieter@cg.tuwien.ac.at http://www.cg.tuwien.ac.at/~dieter/ If you need further information, please contact us! -- Project summary: Mobile Collaborative Augmented Reality The goal of this project is to use Augmented Reality (AR) technology in a mobile setting for collaborative tasks. Starting from a successful project in the past - the collaborative augmented reality environment Studierstube - this project aims at the development of a new mobile collaborative augmented reality system. We propose to create a mobile AR kit consisting of a wearable computer, wireless networking, 3D display, interaction and localization devices. The system will deliver the following key contributions: · A mobile AR user interface which not only allows self-contained interaction with location-independent and location dependent 3D data, but also docking into a stationary Studierstube AR environment. · Support for collaborative mobile AR by establishing instant networked sessions of users in a casual meeting. Users will be able to interact with each other and with virtual 3D objects, which each user brings along into the meeting. This feature distinguishes the proposed user interface from previous approaches. At the end of the project, fully operational mobile environments will be available. Three scenarios are planned to demonstrate and evaluate the results: a conferencing environment with mobile users, an AR building information system, and a two-user outdoor architectural design session. These application scenarios will demonstrate the potential benefits of mobile collaborative augmented reality. Dieter Schmalstieg - dieter@cg.tuwien.ac.at
