First of all I would like to add a ref which might be of interest: P.A. Howarth and P.J. Costello have been doing some work in comparing display systems, though more on the ergonomical / visual effects side - might be interesting. More at: http://www.lut.ac.uk/departments/hu/groups/viserg/viserg1.htm About the discussion itself: seems to me too that indeed it is important to let the specific characteristics of the display flow back into the specific tasks one performs (basic characteristic of interaction I would say..). Of course one could put against it "device independant interaction techniques", which (although often aimed at the input device) would be the other, though also very interesting way. I am very interesting in how this discussion goes on... what I am currently trying to do for my dissertation is to make a task/ user analysis for architectural design (preliminary design phase, so, "sketching and walkthrough"), define little interaction blocks (chunks representing different techniques or combinations) and see how I can combine these (phrase) with(in) different media (ie. chunking and phrasing theory Buxton..). I hope to achieve something which Doug called so nicely "cross-tasking", to use the same blocks/chunks for different tasks in a comfortable way. At the end I hope to have some good chunks together in an architectural application after which I can (via testing..) give some useful comments for this application field. The chunking-and-phrasing is not new, I know, but in combination with such a wide framework of input and output devices (ie. I at least would like to test desktop, HMD, workbench and cave and several common input devices) and the field of architecture it seems interesting and very useful ... although I might change my mind in a year due to complexity... Let's see. Hope this discussion continues! -Ernst PS.
