Thanks Raimund for your kindly notice. I wouldn't claim that InTml is a
standard, but it is a good way to represent VR applications (of course, my
own opinion... ;) We are in the process of creating a platform independent
library for 3D interaction techniques, but right now it is not there yet,
and our website is incomplete... I think Contigra is a good example of
what a library of components for VR can be, at least for PC based
applications.

Best Regards,

Hi Marc,

well, standards are a big problem in the VE/VR field. I know of two efforts
on the SW side regarding standardization of interaction techniques and
3D-widgets. One is the work by Pablo Figueroa (more on the VR-interaction
side) on a Interaction Techniques Markup Language (InTml,
http://www.cs.ualberta.ca/~pfiguero/InTml/). The other are our own efforts
on standardization and componentization of 3D-widgets (more on the
desktop-VR-side). Infos at www.contigra.com or in the Web3D 2002
publication at
http://www-mmt.inf.tu-dresden.de/english/Projekte/CONTIGRA/Dokumentation/Publikationen/.

Have a look at a part of the widget classification and hierarchy under
http://www-mmt.inf.tu-dresden.de/english/Projekte/CONTIGRA/Realisierung/Komponentenhierarchie/
(will be updated soon). The behavior of widgets will be delivered together
with their geometry and can be parameterized in a high-level manner.
Different target formats are possible.
Hope this helps a little.

Kind Regards,

Raimund Dachselt

Hi all, I'm currently looking for the existence of standards in the VE/VR

I interested in hardware standards as well as software ones. Specifically,
on the software side, is there any standard yet? Agreed, we have OpenGL, but
this standard is not directly related to VR. I'm talking about higher-level
standards for user interface and user interaction (IT's). Things like
standard 3D UI toolkits libraries for VR.

Any info / remark / thoughts will be greatly appreciated.
