Symposium 2004

Greetings 3D UI colleague~
My name is Nicholas F. Polys, a
member of the Web3D Symposium Program Committee;
we are looking forward to a great conference this year in Monterey, CA with
lots of exciting developments to catch up on!
Accepted papers and program and posted at:
http://www.web3d.org/s2004/index.html
Since you are an active researcher in this exciting field, I am writing you
with a special invitation...
I am organizing a Workshop or Panel for the conference that will address the
important issues of interface design, standards formats, and the multiplicity
of display and interaction platforms. My interest comes from recent experiences
trying to bring VRML and X3D worlds onto immersive platforms like CAVEs and HMDs.
The tentative themes/titles: 'Scalable 3D User Interfaces?' or '3D UI: from
mobile to desktop to immersive'
Specifically:
How portable are current scenegraph
specifications?
What issues are important to scalable 3D interfaces?
How well can we abstract user interaction across the many
degrees of freedom of input devices?
What approaches and softwares
exist?
Are there guidlelines and lessons
learned from recent implementations?
Can and should future X3D components address this need? How?
My request to you would be to consider if you will be available and willing to
participate. If you are interested, please email me asap.
I have not decided what format would be best, any comments or suggestions are
most welcome!
I may ask you for a short abstract or position statement to help me orient on
how to order and construct things.
The total session may run 1.5 or 3 hours depending on response and
scheduling.
Tutorials and Workshops are scheduled for the first 2 days (Apr. 5 and 6).
Thanks for your consideration and I look forward to meeting you in
best regards,
