2025 CS Ph.D. Qualifier Exam Registration

Students can register for the 2025 CS Ph.D. Qualifier Exam using the following Registration Link. Please note that registration is binding. Failure to take the exam after registering will result in a Fail score. Students planning to request a waiver must also register and complete the relevant section of the registration form.

Changes to the Ph.D. Qualifier Exam this year:

Starting in Spring 2025, area-specific exam committees will assess Ph.D. students’ qualifying exams and determine qualifier waiver eligibility (if applicable). Any questions regarding the rubric for waivers should be directed to the chair of the area-specific committee. The grading scheme for the qualifier exam will be Pass/Fail/Waive.

Default Schedule and Deadlines



Students have ~6 weeks to study, prepare, and take the exam designed by the area-specific committees. The committee has 2-4 weeks to grade the exam and/or conduct oral exams (if needed or required by the committee).

December 27, 2024 (Friday) Qualifier registeration opens. Everyone, including students planning to apply for waiver, must register.
January 6, 2025 (Monday) Last day to finalize qualifier exam format by area-specific committees.
January 13th, 2025 (Monday) Last day to register. Registration Link
~Jan 20, 2025 (Monday) Committees release decisions on qualifier waivers for students who requested them.
January 20 - March 1, 2025 Students take the qualifier exam. Consult the area-specific webpages from the list below for exam format and components.
March 15, 2025 (Saturday) Committees finalize results for the qualifier exam.
March 20, 2025 (Thursday) Results released to students.

Please note that your participation in the survey did not register you for any exam, nor does it signify your commitment to taking one. Your decision to select an area should not be based on the perceived difficulty of the exam. The committees reserve the right to request that you reconsider the area. If you are unsure, consult your research advisor before making your area selection.
