Virginia Tech Department of Computer Science
New Building and Space Projects (2020-2024)
(For VT Internal Use Only)
Blacksburg Campus
The Department of Computer Science will be occupying a substantial amount of new space between 2020 and 2024.
When the
relocation and expansion is complete, the department's space will be organized as follows:
- Torgersen Hall.
CS space in Torgesen doubled in Fall 2020. This building serves as the
administrative headquarters of the department. The Undergraduate Student Services Office, the Graduate Student
Services Office, the Department Head group, and the Fiscal Team are located
here; the External Engagement Team will move here in 2023.
In addition, Torgersen houses a new undergraduate learning center, a tutoring center, and offices and research labs
for approximately 15 tenure-track faculty and 11 instructional faculty. The research
areas represented by faculty in Torgersen include
digital education, computational biology & bioinformatics, quantum computing, scientific computing, and theory.

- Gilbert Street Building.
This new building is expected to be completed in Spring 2023. The department will occupy the 4th floor and most of the 3rd floor.
Research groups in computing systems, security, software engineering, and human-computer action will be located here,
with offices and research labs corresponding to over 40 tenure-track faculty, plus graduate students, research faculty,
visitors, etc. In addition, there will be informal collaboration space for graduate students.

- Data & Decision Sciences Building.
This new building is expected to be completed in Spring 2023.
The department will occupy substantial portions of the 3rd and 4th floors. Offices and lab space for about 20
tenure-track faculty members whose
research and teaching interests are in topics such as AI, data analytics, machine learning, and NLP will be located in
this building, along
with colleagues from the College of Science and the Pamplin College of Business. There will be a number of classrooms
on the 1st and 2nd floors as well, along with additional shared collaboration and meeting spaces.

- McBryde Hall. The department will continue to use space in McBryde Hall to support the undergraduate program
(e.g., the original undergraduate learning center, labs that support specific courses, conference rooms),
and to provide additional offices for a small number of instructional and tenure-track faculty and visitors, as needed.
When this process is complete, the total NASF (net assignable square feet) in Blacksburg will grow from
approximately 57,500 to 110,200. The table below summarizes the changes and the timeline, with
square footages shown in 1000's.

Innovation Campus (Alexandria, VA)
The department has had a thriving graduate program in the Greater Washington, D.C., metro area for several decades.
We currently occupy a total of approximately 6,000 sf in Northern Virginia, with facilities in
the Northern Virginia Center in Falls Church and
the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington.
Planning is currently underway for a new 300,000 sf building that will be the inaugural academic building on Virginia Tech's
Innovation Campus in Alexandria, VA.
With completion set for 2024, the department anticipates occupying substantial portions of floors 3, 4, 5, and 10, amounting
to more than 40,000 sf. Offices and research lab space for 20-25 CS tenure-track and 10 teaching and administrative
faculty will be located in this exciting new facility.
