CS 6824: Computational Genomics Dr. Liqing Zhang Spring 2013 Biological data are accumulating at an ever increasing speed. Now we face the challenge of processing and analyzing the overwhelming amount of data with reasonable speed and efficiency. Various data handling and analysis techniques will be discussed in this course. We will use the data generated by the 1000 human genomes project together with the TCGA data (the Cancer Genome Atlas), to improve existing data handling techniques as well as design new algorithms for several specific data analyses. By the end of the course, you will be familiar with some state-of-the-art techniques for handling large-scale genetic data and have hands-on experience with some actual research projects, such as identifying the genetic variants that might be associated with certain types of cancer or genetic diseases. You will have the opportunity to learn and utilize techniques/programs used regularly by many Bioinformatics companies.
