As a matter of policy, I do not use Facebook or Twitter. The policy stems, in part, from my research on and extended personal experience with mediated connections; mediated connections are para-social relations that are sustainers of -- but poor substitutes for -- f2f relationships.
I do use LinkedIn, but only with people I actually know -- not ones who have found me on the internet. I value my friends and colleagues and wish to preserve the working relations I have developed with them. As a matter of policy, I do not use LinkedIn with current students. There are many students I want to keep in contact with after they leave Virginia Tech. If you were my student and have graduated, please feel free to invite me. I am listed as Steven Harrison.
