Discussions

Throughout the semester, we will hold in-class discussions. These discussions will often involve one or more research papers from the literature. They may also take the form of brainstorming or group design sessions. For each discussion section, one discussant will be assigned. A discussant is simply a discussion leader and facilitator. The discussant will prepare questions and topics beforehand, and will do some additional reading on the subject of the discussion. The discussant is expected to demonstrate knowledge of the subject, an interest in the subject, an understanding of the issues and controversies surrounding the subject, and an ability to guide the class into a discussion of those interesting issues.

Each student should have the opportunity to serve as discussant twice during the semester. Your discussion-leading grade (15% of the semester grade) will be based on the quality of your preparation and the quality of the in-class discussion.
