About

About the lab

The Crowd Intelligence Lab at Virginia Tech, directed by Dr. Kurt Luther, researches the complementary strengths of collective human intelligence and artificial intelligence (AI) in domains like journalism, history, and national security. Our current projects focus on advancing crowd/social computing and human–AI collaboration research to improve open-source intelligence (OSINT) analysis, identify unknown people and places in historical and modern photos, support extreme sensemaking with extended reality (XR) technologies, and understand real-world crowdsourced investigations.

Our research has been featured in media outlets including The Atlantic, CNN, Harvard Business Review, The History Channel, NPR, Smithsonian, TIME, and The Wall Street Journal. We have received funding from the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, US Department of Defense, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Historical Publications and Records Commission, National Institutes of Health, and National Science Foundation (including a CAREER Award).
