Subject: Web-CAT hosting

Stephen,

Thanks again for setting me up as a user of your Web-CAT system. I've been exploring it a little to see how grading scripts are uploaded, changed, and so on. I haven't yet created a new assignment, but am going to try that soon.

If you'll recall, I talked about the issues surrounding our use of a system hosted at VT. In particular, my University has a strong branding philosophy, and directing students to submit assignments to a VT server would be inconsistent with our administration's desires. Also, as our CS Program Chair pointed out, having an external dependency (especially one that is student-facing and which raises student expectations) is a tenuous position. For instance, when you're out of town at a conference, and something happens to the system, we've got little recourse to fix a problem.

With these factors in mind, we've considered the following:

1. Requesting to try to host Web-CAT here for our students (knowing the lack of docs).
2. Using Web-CAT as an optional system for our students, and stick with hand-grading.
3. Investigating alternative (and perhaps inferior) submission systems.

We really like what you're doing, but in light of our constraints, can't fully commit to using a hosted service. Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks,
